Exclusive double-digit growth in August brings wine closer to record sales

National wine exports revived in August, rising 17.5%, pushing back positively for the first eight months of the year. In total, Portugal sold 211.3 million liters abroad, good for 586.2 million euros. That is 4.3 million more than in the same period in 2021, an increase of 0.74% in value. In terms of quantity, we sold 1.94% less, as a result of which the average price increased by 2.73% to 2.77 euros per litre. The president of ViniPortugal speaks of a replacement of bottles and labels and greater availability of containers on the market, issues that had a “strong impact” on August export data, and he is confident the sector will grow in the year ahead. order of 1.5%, setting a new sales record abroad.

In March, wine exports (which grew at double-digit rates for much of 2021) began to decline, dropping more than 8% in that month and nearly 7% in April. In May, they remained in line with the previous year, with only 0.16% loss, but in June they registered another 6% decline. July was already a month of recovery, but August was the big kick-off of the sector’s external recovery. For Frederico Falcão, the explanation lies in the increased availability of bottles, boxes and labels, as well as in transport.
