Erdogan and Putin meet to defend economic ties between Russia and Turkey

During a meeting in Astana, the two presidents discussed the creation of a “gas hub” in Turkey for export to Europe, as well as the continuation of grain exports from Ukraine.

During a meeting Thursday on the sidelines of a regional forum in Astana, Kazakhstan, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Vladimir Putin discussed economic rapprochement between their two countries. Discussions focused on energy and grain exports.

On gas, the Russian president proposed to his Turkish counterpart to create a “gas hub” in Turkey to export gas to Europe, at a time when Russian deliveries to the European Union are affected by sanctions and pipeline leaks. North Stream.

He praised Turkey, which has proven to be “currently the safest route for deliveries” of Russian gas. A possible gas hub in Turkey could also serve “to define the prices” of these hydrocarbons, “today exorbitant”, according to the Russian president.

During this meeting, Turkish President Erdogan, for his part, promised to continue the export of Ukrainian grain. He said he was “determined to continue and strengthen the Istanbul agreement on grain (export) and also to transport Russian grain and fertilizer through Turkey to developing countries,” Erdogan said during a brief public sequence.

The two presidents will hold a private meeting for the fourth time in three months on the sidelines of the 6th summit of the Conference for Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) in Astana, Kazakhstan. Recep Tayyip Erdogan regretted that most of Ukraine’s grain exports, made possible by the international agreement signed on July 19 with the United Nations, Russia, Ukraine and Turkey, were directed to developed countries.

More than seven million tons of grain have flown out of Ukraine through the Black Sea and the Bosphorus since the agreement entered into force on August 1 under the control of the Joint Coordination Center that brings together the four parties in Istanbul.
