Startups earn 2.3 billion euros in Portugal

Portugal has 4,073 ‘startups’ that generate 2.3 billion euros in turnover and 1.3 billion euros in exports, and are also responsible for 25 thousand jobs, according to Startup Portugal, IDC and Informa D&B.

In a statement released today, the entities reported on these data, which are the result of “the update of the criteria for the definition of ‘startup’, carried out in collaboration with Startup Portugal, IDC and Informa D&B, in the framework of the Web Summit .

So, according to the data presented, “the creation of startups has grown every year since the beginning of the last decade, with the exception of 2020”, and “this growth has become increasingly intensive and 70% of the total current “startups” are created over the past five years, with 2021 and 2022 reaching their maximum,” with 600 and 706 respectively.

The majority of these companies, 84%, are in a high-tech knowledge-intensive service sector, the same note states.

“In sectoral terms, the majority of startups (3,278) belong to information and communication technologies, which corresponds to 61% of total turnover.” In turn, despite being much less, “startups in the industrial sector account for a significant turnover of 26%,” the statement said.

According to the data, 35% are exporters, “a percentage much higher than the average for business, which is 11%”, and the 1.3 billion euros worth of business with other countries is fundamental “for exporting startups”. % of total turnover and 5% of total exports of business services”.

More than half of these companies are concentrated in Lisbon and Porto and grew in turnover by 24.4% between 2019 and 2022, “a rate much higher than the 9.1% if we consider the entire business fabric”, which has generated employment growth of 17%. %, a figure that was 1.6% for most companies”.

In terms of average compensation, in these companies it is around 1,700.00 euros per employee, a value 37% higher than the average of all Portuguese companies.
