Bercy wants to tighten unemployment rules for seniors

In search of new savings, Bercy wants to tighten the screws on senior unemployment.

Bercy urges the executive to make new savings. In an interview given to La Tribune du Dimanche, the Minister of Economy and Finance, Bruno le Maire, and the Minister of Public Accounts, Thomas Cazenave, discussed various ways to rectify the public accounts. Among other things, with the tightening of the rules on unemployment for older people.

Bruno le Maire’s words are clear: we must review all compensation systems that fuel unemployment among older people. In his view, all the advantages that older people benefit from. An unemployed person over 55 years of age, for example, can benefit from a longer compensation period, up to 27 months instead of 18 months for other unemployed people. Beyond age 62, an unemployed person can also, under certain conditions, continue to receive unemployment benefits until full retirement.

Waiting for negotiation

The idea of tightening these rules for older people is not new. Within the framework of the negotiation on unemployment insurance, the Government asked the social partners to adapt these criteria to the recent pension reform. That is, postpone all these benefits for two years. However, the unions opposed it. Certainly, the recently signed agreement foresees savings of 440 million euros, but all decisions have been relegated to later, during the future negotiation on the employment of older people.

Bercy is clearly increasing the pressure, although the government has not yet validated the agreement on unemployment insurance signed by the social partners and is preparing to start negotiations on the employment of the elderly.
