Christmas gifts: French budget expected to fall

The average budget goes from 446 euros last year to 426 euros this year, according to the annual barometer carried out by OpinionWay for Bonial.

Restriction under the tree or maintenance of tradition that means that on New Year’s Eve we do not deprive ourselves? The French seem to have decided. According to the barometer prepared each year by the OpinionWay* institute in Bonial, the average budget allocated to all Christmas gifts goes from 446 euros last year to 426 euros this year. A trend reversal since between 2020 and 2022 it continued to increase.

However, it is worth going into details because these 426 euros only affect a minority of French people. TO a quarter of them will be limited to a maximum of 200 euros. And for almost half (44%), this gift budget will not exceed 300 euros. On the other hand, for a third of those surveyed the 500 euro barrier will be exceeded.

1 in 2 French people will buy at least some of Amazon’s gifts

Furthermore, when choosing the brand to make purchases with, more and more French people prefer price, to the point that the number of gifts remains fixed (seven on average). For 43% of them this will be the main criterion. It hasn’t always been like this. In 2020, being able to choose from many different products was the most frequently cited primary criterion (30% of respondents vs. 28% for price).

Unsurprisingly, Amazon makes the most of this particular context. More than one in two French people (52% compared to 47% in 2022) plan to go to the site to buy Christmas gifts. This is double that of Leclerc, which, however, occupies second position, ahead of Cultura.

*Survey conducted online from November 15 to 16 among a panel of 1,053 people representative of the French population aged 18 and over.
