Portugal with two Management Schools in the European top 25

Portugal has five higher education institutions ranked among the 90 best management schools in Europe by the Financial Times (FT) in 2023. Nova SBE, Católica-Lisbon, Iscte, Porto Business School and ISEG are part of this prestigious list, and all registered an increase in position compared to last year.

Nova SBE is the best ranked, at 21st place, up three positions, and right behind it is Católica-Lisbon, at 22nd, up five places compared to 2022. These two educational institutions thus appear in the top 25 in Europe. The classification is the result of the good scores of the master’s degrees, executive courses and the MBA they have in common, the Lisbon MBA. The list released today by the FT is the result of the consolidation of these other rankings, which have already been released.

Pedro Oliveira, director of Nova SBE, emphasizes that “by achieving the best position ever achieved by a national school in this ranking, the results obtained prove the upward trajectory of Nova SBE at the national level and especially internationally”. Filipe Santos, director of Católica-Lisbon, states that the school “is today a hub for attracting talent for world-class teachers and students, a generator of advanced knowledge in economics and management.”

But if Nova and Católica are the ones taking the lead among the national schools, it was Iscte that registered the biggest increase this year. In fact, it was the second largest of all higher education institutions included in the FT rankings, just after the University of Bologna. It rose 23 positions compared to last year to 44th place and now enters the European top 50.

“The increase of 23 positions in the ranking reflects our commitment to the quality of education and research, in a process of permanent updating of the training offer with an emphasis on internationalization,” says Maria João Cortinhal, director of Iscte Business School.

In the north, Porto Business School rose six places compared to last year and currently occupies the 53rd position. The institution emphasizes that “unlike other schools in the rankings, Porto Business School competes in only three of the four categories that contribute to this classification”. Furthermore, it notes that “taking into account the close and fruitful cooperation between the Porto Business School and the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto, the two entities appear to be jointly appointed”.

“The increase of 23 positions in the ranking reflects our commitment to the quality of education and research, on a path of permanent updating of the training offer with an emphasis on internationalization,” says Maria João Cortinhal, director of Iscte Business School.

“This trajectory reflects the excellence of our Business Management master’s program top 10 in the perspectives of salary evolution and top 25 in the value for money of master’s degrees worldwide, but also in terms of executive training, through Iscte Executive Education, which is number one in Portugal in terms of international programs and the 5th with the highest growth in the world,” adds Maria João Cortinhal.

In the north, Porto Business School rose six places compared to last year and currently occupies the 53rd position. In a statement, the institution emphasizes that “unlike other schools present in the rankingPorto Business School competes in only three of the four categories that contribute to this classification”. Furthermore, it notes that “taking into account the close and fruitful cooperation between Porto Business School and the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto, the two entities appear with the joint name (University of Porto | FEP-PBS)”.

ISEG, which appears on the FT list for the second year in a row, rose six places to 59th. João Duque, president of ISEG, says that “it is the recognition of the brand of excellence and innovation of our master’s degrees and executive training, but also a sign of the consolidation of an offer that has attracted the best students, in Portugal and a little worldwide.”

The director of Nova SBE shares the same sentiment: “The rising position of other Portuguese business schools is proof that Portugal can assert itself internationally and grow as a destination country to study, as well as strongly contribute to its reputation at the higher level education.” education on a global scale”.

Just like Filipe Santos, director of Católica Lisbon, who says that “Portugal should also be congratulated for this ranking, because having five recognized business schools should be a source of satisfaction for all Portuguese and a sign of the quality of management education in Lisbon.” Portugal”.
