The national debt falls to 270,400 ME in October

The national debt from the perspective of Maastricht, which counts for Brussels, fell in October by 3 billion euros on an annual basis and by 9,500 million euros in chain form to 270,400 million euros, the BdP announced on Monday.

According to the Bank of Portugal (BdP), the decline compared to September “reflected the decline in debt securities (-9,100 million euros), mainly due to the write-off of a government bond originally issued in June 2008”.

The decrease in public debt was accompanied by a reduction in assets in public administration deposits by 10,900 million euros, which means that, after deducting these deposits, public debt increased by 1,400 million euros to 252,600 million euros.

On an annual basis, compared to October 2022, government debt has decreased by 3,020 million euros.

In the third quarter of this year, the national debt from Maastricht’s perspective fell to 107.5% of gross domestic product (GDP), 2.6 percentage points less than in the previous quarter, the BdP announced on November 2.

In September 2023, the national debt amounted to 279,926 million euros, 531 million euros less than in August, but 231 million euros more than in September last year.
