Medina reassured Europe: “Portugal is in a stable situation”

Finance Minister Fernando Medina today noted the “very strong interest” of his European Union (EU) colleagues in the political crisis in Portugal, but assured them that the country “is stable from a financial point of view”.

“Of course there is always great interest on the part of the different countries in what is happening in Portugal and in the Portuguese situation. [mas] I had the opportunity to transmit to my colleagues more precise information about our reality and to inform them that Portugal is in a stable situation from a financial point of view,” said Fernando Medina.

Speaking to Portuguese journalists in Brussels after Thursday’s Eurogroup meetings and today’s Ecofin meetings, the government official said Portugal “has approved its budget and […]the necessary instruments for the country to live normally from an economic and financial point of view”.

Moreover, “we have growth prospects that are maintained and higher than those of the Eurozone, both with regard to 2023 and with regard to the year 2024, and after that we will have what is normal in all countries, namely democracy. with parliamentary elections scheduled for March 10,” said Fernando Medina.

The Portuguese Finance Minister also said that he had emphasized to his European colleagues “that the country currently has the tools and the determination to, as [o atual Governo] is in power, continue this policy.”

The President of the Republic announced the dissolution of the Assembly of the Republic and called early elections for March 10, 2024, following the resignation of the Prime Minister, António Costa.

The choice of date focused on the global final vote on OE2024, the adoption of which took place on November 29.
