Alqueva will host the largest floating photovoltaic project in Europe with a base of 45 MU

The Alqueva Development and Infrastructure Company (EDIA) launched the procedure for the installation of the largest floating photovoltaic project in Europe, with 45 million euros as the base price of the tender, the government said.

“The contractual procedure for the supply, installation and licensing of four self-consumption production units (UPAC) together with pumping stations of the primary network of the Alqueva Multi-Purpose Enterprise (EFMA) has already been launched by EDIA,” said the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Supply, in a note to Lusa.

According to the director, this will be the largest floating photovoltaic project in Europe, with an estimated production of 90 gigawatt hours (GWh)/year.

The basic price of the tender is 45 million euros.

In total, the energy obtained from these photovoltaic plants would be sufficient to supply 2/3 of the population of Baixo Alentejo.

EFMA already has nine photovoltaic installations in operation.

The energy will be produced by photovoltaic panels installed on floating structures and then routed to pumping stations.

The plants will cover an area of approximately 42 hectares of waterfront.

It is estimated that approximately 100,000 photovoltaic panels will be needed, which will avoid the emission of 30,000 tons of CO2 (carbon dioxide) per year.

“The energy transition and decarbonization of the economy are priorities for the country and are considered determining factors for the sustainability of the Alqueva project, as we are faced with the main source of variable costs in water distribution,” he argued, quoted in the same article. statement by the Minister of Agriculture, Maria do Céu Antunes.
