For Carlos Tavares, the Red Sea crisis “is not a major problem for the automobile industry”

For the head of Stellantis, the crisis in the Red Sea could increase transport costs in the short term, but should not weigh heavily on the European car industry.

The crisis in the Red Sea, with attacks on commercial ships by the Houthi rebels, has limited economic consequences for the moment, but with certain tensions on the supply of certain components.

The automobile industry is especially affected, in the European factories of Tesla, Volvo, Suzuki and Michelin. But nothing that worries Carlos Tavares.

“I don’t expect a big impact. Yes, the journey will be longer if we have to go around Africa. The crisis in the Red Sea could have an impact on the cost because logistics companies will say that we use containers for longer than usual. so there could be discussions about how to compensate for this cost,” analyzed the head of Stellantis during a video press conference this Friday, January 19.

“It’s not a major problem”

For Carlos Tavares, the consequences should therefore be limited for the automobile industry.

About 12% of global maritime trade typically passes through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, which controls access to the southern Red Sea. But since mid-November, the number of containers has fallen by 70%, according to maritime experts.
