“No one says that people are lazy”: Minister of Labor defends unemployment insurance reform

Guest of the Franceinfo morning show, Catherine Vautrin once again addressed the avenues for the unemployment insurance reform announced by Prime Minister Gabriel Attal on Wednesday evening.

What levers does the government want to activate for the next unemployment insurance reform? on the set of Franceinfo On Thursday morning, Labor Minister Catherine Vautrin indicates that nothing has been decided and that a dialogue will begin with the social partners on this issue. However, he confirmed the talking points presented by Prime Minister Gabriel Attal on Wednesday evening, namely compensation conditions set at six months of work over a two-year period, the duration of compensation which could be reduced without lower than twelve months or the amount of compensation that has already been the subject of a recent reform and is not favored by the Head of Government.

The Minister of Labor, Health and Solidarity also paved the way for other ideas, in particular an approach by age groups but without giving details. “We are doing this reform so that people return to employment,” he insisted. […] Nobody says that people are lazy and we have a labor market that shows that there are offers and there is no one ahead. We need to bring together those who offer a job and those who are looking for it.”

“A social investment”

Asked about the unemployment insurance surplus, Catherine Vautrin assured that “the trajectory is 11 billion in 2027”, compared to a deficit of more than three and a half billion, and recalled that this regime “makes it possible to finance training.”

Finally, the government member referred to the ongoing negotiations between unions and business organizations regarding the “life at work” pact, which were to conclude on Tuesday but were finally extended until April 8: “We hope that they will present an agreement “Behind, the framework letter corresponded to the economic situation of September 2023, which is not today’s. We tell them “what you have done must be transposed, we suggest that you renegotiate until a landing in the fall.”
