Shortage of seasonal workers: Thierry Marx recognizes “a real question about the cost of labor”

The star chef wants to insist on the “tax on work”, to counteract the lack of available housing and the increase in rents in tourist areas.

“There is a lack of positions in the kitchen, in the service, positions on the floor (cleaning woman or man)…” On the set of BFMTV, the star chef and president of the UMIH (Union of Trades and Industries of the (hotel industry) Thierry Marx returned to the labor shortage that has affected the hospitality sector for several years.

According to figures from professionals, more than 200,000 positions remain to be filled. “This line of 200,000 positions is constant throughout the year, with peaks as the seasons approach,” says Thierry Marx. According to the star chef, one in two companies has recruitment difficulties. Consequence: some professionals are forced to limit access to their establishment due to lack of staff.

The housing shortage has become the main obstacle to hiring seasonal workers, considers Thierry Marx. “This is the impact of furnished tourist accommodation,” he says. In fact, the explosion of platforms such as Airbnb on the coast or in the winter seasons is restricting housing solutions for workers. Without forgetting the exile of city dwellers to the coasts and the search for a second home that is driving prices upward.

“Uberization of society”

“When the entire salary goes to housing, it is impossible (to accept the job), observes Emmanuel Lechypre, economic columnist for BFMTV, who also points out an evolution in the sociology of temporary workers. “Fifteen years ago, children were common. locals who occupied these types of positions, so there was less of a housing problem,” he points out.

Thierry Marx also raises another challenge facing the sector: “the Uberization of society”: “there are platforms in which the worker is registered as self-employed, which offer employment opportunities.” To respond to this new problem, the head of the UMIH wants to insist “on employment taxation”, an essential lever, according to him, to stop the labor shortage.

One of the few positive points distributed by the star chef is intended for… France Travail. The establishment offers “pop-ups” on careers in the hospitality and restaurant sector in order to familiarize job seekers with the sector.
