On Friday, the State placed an order of 600 million euros for nuclear propulsion elements of the future new generation aircraft carrier (PANG), known as “long delivery times”, almost 15 years before the entry into service of the ship, reported the Ministry. of the Armed Forces announced on Tuesday.
The General Directorate of Armaments has notified this order to MO-Porte-avion, a joint venture between Naval Group and Chantiers de l’Atlantique, which will build the ship, as well as TechnicAtome, responsible for the nuclear boiler rooms. This involves the manufacturing of the two K22 nuclear boiler rooms that will provide the energy necessary for the propulsion of the ship, its containment enclosures and the equipment linked to the conversion of the heat emitted by the boiler rooms into electricity, the ministry details in a press release.
A cost that exceeds 5 billion euros
The future aircraft carrier must enter service in 2038, two years after its launch, to succeed the Charles-De-Gaulle. It will be much larger than the current aircraft carrier. It will weigh 75,000 tons per approximately 300 meters of length, compared to the Charles-De-Gaulle’s 42,000 tons per 261 meters, which is more than the two British aircraft carriers, but less than the eleven American aircraft carriers.
The cost of development and construction is not known at this time. According to a 2020 Senate report, “it will probably exceed €5 billion.”
