Germany will extend the life of two of its three nuclear power plants until April, as recommended by power transmission system operators, the German government announced on Monday.
The last three German nuclear power plants will close at the end of the year, according to the calendar adopted by the government of former Chancellor Angela Merkel, after the Fukushima disaster in 2011.
The two plants, located in the south of the country – where pressures on energy infrastructure are particularly significant – would remain open until April 2023 to deal with possible power cuts next winter.
The German Economy Minister, Robert Habeck, explained that this decision had been taken due to the reduction in Russian gas deliveries, but stressed that this did not put in doubt the exit of nuclear energy.
