Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical harmful to health, has been found in large quantities in the clothing of eight ready-to-wear brands in the United States. This was reported by the US Center for Environmental Health (CEH) on October 12 in a statement.
The companies singled out include Asics, The North Face, Nike, Fila, New Balance and Reebok.
According to the organization, the affected sports shirts and bras presented a risk of exposure to bisphenol A 22 times higher than the threshold prescribed by California law.
Different bodily functions affected
BPA is an endocrine disruptor that can alter the concentration of hormones in our body.
“These compounds potentially affect different functions of the body: metabolism, reproductive functions, nervous system,” Inserm underlines on its site.
Clothing worn for several hours.
Exposure to BPA occurs through ingestion (for example, by drinking water from containers containing BPA residues) or through the skin, for example, by handling repeated receipts.
Following the notice from the CEH, the eight affected brands now have sixty days to reformulate the composition of their products and withdraw the items from the market. After this period, the organization may file a complaint against these companies.
Last year, the CEH selected more than 90 companies to review the composition of their products.
