Energy: three new aid plans for companies and communities

Elisabeth Borne presented in particular the “electric shock absorber” for VSEs and SMEs excluded from the tariff shield.

Amid soaring energy prices, the government on Thursday unveiled new mechanisms to help businesses, especially small and medium-sized ones, pay their bills. 10,000 million euros will be dedicated to it, a “fully financed” endowment, explained the Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire.

At a press conference, Elisabeth Borne presented in particular the “electric shock absorber” for VSEs and SMEs excluded from the tariff shield due to the power of their electricity meter, which must not exceed 36 kilovolt-amperes. What many energy-intensive SMEs such as bakeries rule out.

Savings of 120 euros per MWh on average

This shock absorber that affects small companies but also communities, associations, hospitals, universities will allow, according to Bruno the mayor, “to save an average of 120 euros per MWh”.

In the case of state aid, the mechanism must be approved by the European Commission, which is responsible for verifying that it does not harm competition within the Union. Green light that France will win “for sure” for SMEs, according to Bruno Le Maire.

The Government will also “simplify and expand targeted aid, already in force for companies.”

As for the communities, it will present a reform to the Treasury bill that provides for “the extension and expansion of the safety net for the year 2023.”
