Voice, palm, iris… is biometrics the future of payments?

Worldline, a French specialist in electronic payments, is currently testing “palmaire de pago” in its laboratory.

The health crisis has accelerated the payment revolution. In stores, contactless payments have become widespread, but this raises important questions in terms of security. “Security is one of the obsessions of this industry,” said Worldline CEO Gilles Grapinet on the set of BFM Business this Friday morning.

“This industry is based on a tripod” that are “ease of use” because “everyone should be able to use digital payments”, “very large volumes” with “tens of billions of transactions” and “hypersecurity”, because it is “money that circulates directly, it is not data”, stressed the leader of the French specialist in electronic payments.

“It’s your identity”

The sector is “constantly investing in the trends of the next ten years,” he said. Worldline is currently testing “palm payment” in its lab: the customer would authenticate directly during payment by placing his hand.

Biometrics could prevail in payments in the future. “I think that biometrics will have a role in the future of payment experiences,” said Gilles Grapinet, citing the iris, the voice, the palm of the hand, the venous network, body temperature patterns or even electrical circulation in the skin. “It’s amazing how unique an individual is on Earth,” he explained.
