Nuclear: the bill to accelerate procedures on Wednesday in the Council of Ministers

This bill is a first step before the construction of 6 new nuclear reactors that Emmanuel Macron wants.

The bill on the acceleration of nuclear reactor construction procedures will be presented to the Council of Ministers on Wednesday, the Minister for Energy Transition, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, announced on Friday in Chinon (Indre-et-Loire).

“We must (…) start up six new nuclear reactors and study eight additional reactors. The elements that will be taken into account to choose this or that site will be security elements. We also want to have the support of the population and elected officials,” the minister said during a visit to the Chinon nuclear power plant. The Government, through the minister, announced in mid-September its willingness to present a nuclear bill in early 2023.

“If we want to be energy independent but also meet our climate goals and continue to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, we must replace fossil fuels with low-carbon energy. Nuclear energy is today the lowest carbon energy of all the solutions we have. ”, she argued.

Salary agreement at EDF

After a meeting with the unions and the plant workers, the minister “welcomed the spirit of responsibility of the unions”, after the signing, on Thursday, of an agreement on the annual negotiations within EDF. “This agreement also shows that in a very short time social dialogue can work, it can make it possible to find solutions and today all the plants are in operation, all the maintenance operations are being carried out”, greeted Agnès Pannier-Runacher.

The wage agreement signed on Thursday ended several weeks of strikes at nuclear power plants. Taking into account the sectoral agreement on increases in the electricity and gas sectors signed on October 17, workers will benefit in 2023 from a total increase of 4.6%.
