Hotels, campsites, residences… In 2021, the European Union’s tourist accommodation capacity amounted to 28.1 million beds in 597,000 establishments*, according to Eurostat.
With 5.1 million beds in each of the two countries, France (18%) and Italy (18%) represent more than a third of the continental tourist offer. They are followed by Spain (3.8 million, 13%), Germany (3.5 million, 12%) and the Netherlands (1.4 million, 5%).
It should be noted that the Covid-19 pandemic has had an impact on the tourist offer within the European Union. Thus, the number of beds in 2021 was 2% lower than its 2019 level (28.8 million). The number of establishments was 617,953 in 2019, 3% more than today.
Large majority of tourists from the EU
Last year, 591 million overnight stays were made by foreign clients in the different EU countries. Three quarters of these same nights were booked by travelers from other Member States of the European Union, and 16% by tourists from other European countries.
Covid obliges, the proportion of overnight stays by international clients in the EU fell from 16% to 8% between 2019 and 2021. In detail, tourists from North America accounted for 4% of total overnight stays in EU accommodation last year. EU, compared to 2% for those in Asia, 1% for Central and South America, 1% for Africa and 0.2% for Oceania.
*Some countries apply data collection thresholds. Thus, in some countries, establishments with fewer than ten places are not included in these statistics, but the threshold applied is not identical throughout the European Union.
