The German airline Lufthansa will grant up to a 17% salary increase to its cabin crew, in order to compensate for the record inflation that accentuates salary demands, the first European airline announced on Tuesday.
Lufthansa and the UFO union have reached an agreement “on salary increases for our 19,000 cabin crew,” the company said in a statement.
This agreement “includes an increase of 250 euros from January 1, 2023 and an additional 2.5% from July 1, 2023,” Lufthansa detailed.
In total, these increases will reach 17% for new employees and 9% for the oldest.
This agreement, which should be in force until December 31, 2023, concludes a period of high-risk union negotiations for Lufthansa, due to inflation.
In early September, pilots stopped work for 24 hours, forcing Lufthansa to cancel almost all of its flights from Frankfurt and Munich, its two hubs in Germany.
More than 10% inflation in Germany
The group narrowly escaped a new strike in mid-September, thanks to an agreement that allowed the pilots’ basic pay to be increased by 980 euros.
Lufthansa also reached an agreement in early August with the Verdi union, which represents ground staff.
These employees received an increase of 200 euros per month, then an additional 2.5% in early 2023 and another 2.5% in July 2023.
Inflation is reaching peaks in Germany, topping 10% in a year, which is straining wage negotiations in many sectors.
The IG Metall union began strike movements in the vast industrial branch of metallurgy and electroindustry since Saturday, to obtain an 8% increase in wages.
