Does Air France want to move closer to the low-cost model? In fact, the airline will be testing paid meals in Economy class on the Paris-Lisbon and Paris-Helsinki routes from next January.
Today, passengers are entitled to a snack (a small sandwich or pastry and a drink) on the company’s short or medium-haul flights.
This free offer will not disappear (a drink and a sweet will be offered), but will be supplemented with paid à la carte products, reports Le Figaro.
Remember that on low-cost flights, everything is charged to the passenger, whether it’s food or drinks. Just like checked luggage or seat selection, paid meals are part of the economic model of these companies, which allows them to offer tickets at reduced prices.
No changes in the business
“Air France is constantly studying opportunities to develop its offering in order to better meet its customers’ expectations, in line with market developments,” the company explained to our colleagues.
It is also and above all a way of reducing operating costs in a highly competitive market, particularly for short and medium-haul flights, where low cost wins. If this test proves conclusive on both fronts, it will be generalised.
For Business passengers, however, there are no changes with a full meal served on board. A mandatory service given the price of the ticket for this class…
