Why CAF aid will be paid (a little) in advance in October

Although traditionally paid on the 5th of the month, family allowance fund payments are postponed when this day falls on a weekend.

CAF beneficiaries will receive their benefits at the beginning of next month. Usually paid on the 5th of each month, this aid may be slightly delayed when the 5th of the month in question falls on a weekend. However, October 5, 2024 will be a Saturday. In its end-of-year payment calendar published at the beginning of July, the family allowance fund indicated that the September payment would take place from Friday, October 4.

In addition, beneficiaries will only receive payment for their aid for the last month of the year on Monday, January 6, 2025, for the same reason. In addition, CAF reminds on its website that the actual payment in the recipient’s account may vary depending on the bank, and may be credited to the account “up to 3 days later.”

A return to school in 2024 cheaper than in 2023 but still expensive for families

This slightly earlier payment of the aid for the month of September comes a few weeks after the back-to-school period, which is traditionally quite expensive for a large number of French families. However, in separate surveys, two associations representing families estimated that the cost of returning to school was falling, after several years of increases.

The annual barometer of the Families of France measured a 1.27% drop in the cost of supplies for a sixth-grade student, while the Confederation of Trade Unions of Families reported an overall drop in the family budget of 6.8%. For the two associations, however, the inflection was not enough to offset several years of rising prices: in 2023, the cost of supplies increased by 8.73% and the family budget registered a jump of 11.3%. Thus, the average cost of returning to school “remains much higher than before the health crisis”, noted Familles de France.
