Taxes: Michel Barnier’s entourage assures that “no fiscal measures are planned at this time”

The Prime Minister’s entourage has, however, indicated that Michel Barnier “will not refrain from moving in the direction of greater tax justice”.

Does Michel Barnier intend to raise taxes? While several indiscretions revealed on Tuesday the Prime Minister’s desire to increase the tax burden on the richest taxpayers and profitable companies, Matignon remains vague.

“The information shared is based solely on rumours. The only thing the Prime Minister has said is that he will not refrain from moving in the direction of greater tax justice,” the same source continues. “That is the only direction.”

However, according to information from Le Parisien, confirmed by BFMTV, Michel Barnier confided his tax increase plan to different people. The newspaper mentions in particular an exchange with Gérald Darmanin, during a meeting of the Ensemble pour la République group on Tuesday, September 17 at the National Assembly.

High-income goals?

According to the outgoing Minister of the Interior, Michel Barnier, who pointed out the state of public finances, he has repeatedly raised the possibility of an increase – even in front of him – without specifying his intentions. A prospect that would merit a prior debate for Gérald Darmanin, who does not want us to “touch the country’s attractiveness policy and our tax reduction policy”.

Another recent interlocutor of Michel Barnier confirms having heard the Prime Minister mention tax increases “for high incomes”. Sources also explained to BFMTV that tax increases could target “rich taxpayers and profitable companies”.

But according to people close to Republican leaders Laurent Wauquiez and Bruno Retailleau, quoted by AFP, Michel Barnier did not raise this idea with them during their discussions.
