Pensions: Labour Minister Astrid Panosyan-Bouvet wants to make the reform “more sustainable”

The new Minister of Labour believes that it is necessary to “respond to the anxieties” that the pension reform “may have generated, particularly among women”.

The new Minister of Labour, Astrid Panosyan-Bouvet, said on Monday that the controversial pension reform must be “more sustainable for everyone”, considering also that “full employment should not be the only priority”.

“Working for two more years in a country where, after the age of 55, you feel that you no longer have your place in the world of work, or where the work you do is difficult (…), can seem distressing,” he continued. “For seven years, governments have been focusing a lot on full employment. It is essential,” he also considered, calling in particular for “continuing efforts to reform France Travail (formerly Pôle emploi, editor’s note) or to support RSA beneficiaries.”

What is the future of unemployment insurance reform?

“But full employment should not be the only priority,” because “it is not work,” it is “a place to build self-esteem and social ties” and “the means to a dignified and decent life,” said the minister. She has not revealed her intentions regarding the reform of unemployment insurance, while the current rules will only be in force until October 31.

On the subject of the method, the new minister of Norwegian origin said she was convinced, “as a good Scandinavian”, “that a compromise is not a compromise”, stating that she “believes in social democracy and in the legitimacy of social partners, trade unions and business organisations”.

“I will work to recover and consolidate them,” insisted this former director of the company CAC 40, who also expressed her conviction of the “essential” role that companies can play “for full employment and quality of employment.”

Full employment, which Head of State Emmanuel Macron has set himself the goal of achieving by 2027, is defined by a “frictional” unemployment rate, which affects only people between two jobs or entering the labour market, estimated at around 5% (compared to 7.3% today).
