After Emmanuel Macron, Bruno Le Maire opposes the indexation of wages to inflation

Bercy’s boss denounced a measure that would fuel the inflationary spiral and generate a loss of competitiveness and attractiveness of the French economy.

The Minister of Economy and Finance, Bruno Le Maire, ruled out this Wednesday any indexation of wages to inflation, a request made in particular by the CGT and to which President Emmanuel Macron had already closed the door at the end of October. The need, declared the Minister at the opening of the debates in the Senate on the budget planning law, is “to avoid the inflationary spiral that had caused in the 1970s a general and automatic increase in wages totally unrelated to the productivity of the worked”. .

A risk of loss of competitiveness and attractiveness

Without naming the unions, Bruno Le Maire swept away the “demagogic promises” of indexing each other, hailing a “responsible” decision by Emmanuel Macron, who had ruled out general indexing a week ago at France 2. In addition to the CGT, which is Calling for a general indexation of wages to inflation at the national level, four civil service unions have recently called for index point indexation to inflation.

According to the minister, a generalized indexation would suppose “a new reduction in the margin of the companies that, suddenly, would be forced to transfer this loss of margin to the increase in consumer prices”.

Advance in the proposal of dividends for employees

The Government periodically asks companies that can raise wages and highlights the revaluation of the Smic for the most modest. He also defends employee profit-sharing schemes and tax-exempt bonuses.
