Matignon will finally not transmit his draft budget to the Higher Council of Public Finances this Monday, according to BFM Business. A shipment that was postponed at the last minute because Bercy, in search of savings, is still finalizing the final details. The deadline to send it to the High Council has been extended until Wednesday.
According to the usual budget calendar, the government has until October 1 to send its finance bill to the Higher Council of Public Finances. But the late appointment of the new Prime Minister and his government has made the schedule stricter. “Never in 60 years has a prime minister been forced to present a budget in two weeks,” said Michel Barnier on Saturday during the 130th congress of French firefighters.
A public deficit greater than 6% this year
And the discovery by the Prime Minister and the new tenants of the Ministry of Economy of a more serious slide in the public deficit than expected did not make it easier for the new team to take office.
Before the Finance Committee of the National Assembly, the Minister of Budget, Laurent Saint-Martin, announced that the public deficit could reach 6% by 2024, well above the 4.4% forecast at the beginning of the year and even 5 .1% which was still expected this summer. . According to our information, if nothing is done, it could even fall to 6.3%.
To urgently try to correct the situation, Antoine Armand, Minister of the Economy, and Laurent Saint-Martin are working intensively to find ways of saving and new income. Increase in corporate tax, exceptional contribution from large companies, cuts in learning aid… Ideas are flowing at the moment in Bercy. But nothing has been done yet and therefore the Government has managed to get a little more time to decide.
