Editing is no exception. The revelation of the Goncourt 2022 prize, awarded today to Brigitte Giraud for “Vivre vite”, is an opportunity to highlight the world of books and confirm that it suffers from inflation like all business sectors of the economy. This price increase even reaches 70% for its raw material, paper, knowing that publishing is also subject to extremely high energy prices.
Paper already accounts for 60% of the cost of manufacturing a book
If it has already launched the reprint of more than 300,000 thousand copies of “Vivre Vite”, the Flammarion publishing house may have to pass on this price increase:
Several options are emerging to compensate for the increase in the manufacturing price without affecting the sale price but inducing choice, either on the paper used itself or on the presence or absence of the jacket, the sewing being especially expensive. One figure is particularly instructive: paper now accounts for 60% of the manufacturing price of a book, compared with the usual 40%.
