Large distribution: scarcity increases on supermarket shelves

The beverage, fresh produce and grocery departments are the most affected by these shortages.

The shelves of hypermarkets and supermarkets continue to empty a little more. According to the latest publication by the analysis firm NielsenIQ, the stockout rate in mass distribution increased again in October and stood at 5.8%. This is 1.7 points more than the rate measured last year in the same period. And to find these missing products in your store, consumers have to wait an average of four days.

Fresh produce and groceries

The hardest-to-find food products for consumers continue to be groceries. The break rate for this category also increased by 2 points compared to October 2021, the strongest increase seen compared to September. A trend that is explained in particular by the scarcity of vinaigrettes and cold sauces such as mustard.

The scarcity of these products on the shelves is also the heaviest in hypermarkets and supermarkets: it represents 31% of their lost profits.

The ruptures observed in the fresh departments are also worrying since they are the cause of 20% of the loss of income of the stores. On their own, fresh produce and groceries thus account for 60% of the loss, induced by all shortages, for brands.

3,500 million euros of deficit

And this deficit is not negligible. NielsenIQ estimates the total gross loss for large retailers at €3.5bn from the beginning of 2022. For a full year, it could even reach €4.4bn.

As for beverages, whose supply is also interrupted, its shortage rate stood at 6.8% in October. Carbonated waters, still waters, and flavored waters in particular have the lowest availability rates.

In the non-food domain, face masks and cotton swabs seem to be the least available products on the shelves.
