As Russia opts for targeted attacks on energy infrastructure, the Western response is mounting. The G7 group agreed on Friday to establish “a coordination mechanism” to help Ukraine repair and defend its critical electricity and water infrastructure.
It must allow the coordination of the specific aid of the countries to repair the facilities and deliver “water pumps, heating devices, housing and sanitary containers, beds, blankets, tents”, the head of German Diplomacy Annalena had explained the day before. Baerbock, whose country holds the presidency of the G7.
In their final statement, they also denounced Russia’s “unacceptable nuclear rhetoric.”
No “dirty bomb”
The industrialized countries (the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and Japan) have also rejected Moscow’s “false” accusations that Ukraine is preparing a “dirty bomb”. The investigation carried out by the UN agency IAEA “confirmed that these allegations were unfounded,” they stress.
The G7 will continue to impose “economic costs on Russia and other countries, individuals or institutions that provide military support to Moscow’s war (…) as some of us have already done regarding concerns about the delivery of drones from Iran to Russia, the ministers said.
In this sense, they reiterated their call to the Belarusian authorities, who assure that they do not want to get directly involved in the war, “stop allowing Russia’s war of aggression”, even authorizing Russian soldiers to be stationed on their territory that Russia used as a rear base for the invasion of Ukraine in late February.
