The French bought more vegetable substitutes for products of animal origin last year than in 2022 and 2021, despite the increase in prices, indicates the NGO Good Food Institute Europe, based on data from distributors.
More precisely, in 2023, 18.3 million kilos of vegetable alternatives to meat, such as vegetable sausages, which seek to imitate the taste and texture of meat, were sold in France, compared to 17.7 million in 2022 and 17.5 million in 2021. .
An increase despite inflation
At the same time, the average price of meat of plant origin increased by 27% in two years, going from 9.52 euros per kilo in 2021 to 12.08 euros per kilo in 2023. The sales volume of vegetable milks and others Vegetable Milk-based drinks increased by 2.6% in 2023 compared to 2022 and 3.5% compared to 2021. However, their prices are much higher than those of animal milk (70% more expensive) and increased by 8% in two years.
These two categories represent two thirds of the market for vegetable substitutes for animal proteins in France, estimated by the NGO at 648 million euros in 2023, or 11% more than in 2022. A growth parallel to the increase in food prices , which peaked in March 2023.
The NGO defines itself as a “think tank that helps build a more sustainable, safe and fair food system through the diversification of meat production.” On its site, it states that it does not receive donations from companies dedicated to “alternative industries to animal proteins.”
