The Chicago Transportation Authority has awarded a group of companies, including Vinci, a contract for $2.78 billion to expand nine kilometers of line and four new stations, the French group announced this Monday in a statement.
Vinci’s Large Project Construction subsidiary will partner with the American construction company Walsh, 40% and 60% respectively, to carry out the expansion of the “red line” of the subway of the third American city, including the implementation of the service planned for 2030.
This work, which will cover 6.4 km of aerial section, aims to serve the disadvantaged communities on the south side of Chicago. The new infrastructure will be “fully accessible to people with reduced mobility,” the statement underlines. “Some 100,000 additional residents will have access to a carbon-free public transport service, which will significantly reduce travel time to reach the city center in particular,” the group specifies.
Development in the United States
Vinci has committed to allocating 10% of design hours and 35% of construction hours to people from economically disadvantaged areas of the city. Around 22% of purchases will be made from local SMEs, the company promises.
The French construction giant continues its development in the United States, after, for example, the acquisition in April of a 14 km toll section of the Denver (Colorado) ring road for around $1.2 billion.
Vinci Construction achieved 54% of its turnover internationally in the first half of 2024, in particular by densifying its geographical coverage in North America through several targeted acquisitions, according to the group’s latest activity report. The Vinci group as a whole had a turnover of 1.5 billion euros in the United States in the first semester, that is, 4.3% of the total for the semester.
