Despite inflation, candy sales continue to rise for Halloween in France

In the second fortnight of October, more than 68 million euros in sweets were sold, 5.4% more than in 2021.

Halloween continues to do business for bakers despite inflation. If the festival itself, imported from the United States, has never really taken hold in France, it remains an opportunity to buy sweets.

With 68.2 million euros, candy sales in supermarkets registered an increase of 5.4% in the second half of October compared to the same period of the previous year, according to initial data from the panelist NielsenIQ stopped on Sunday, October 30 .

In the last two weeks of October 2021, almost 65 million euros in candy had been sold. In 2020 they had only risen to 53.8 million euros, penalized by the second confinement that had begun on October 30.

More and more promotions

But, on supermarket shelves, the success of Halloween is increasingly based on promotions: 42% of candy packages sold during this period in 2022 were on promotion, that is, 4 points more than in 2021 and 7 points more than in 2020, specifies NielsenIQ.

In addition, the French bought their sweets early: almost half (47%) of the turnover for the fortnight of Halloween was achieved in the first week, 5 points more than in 2021.
