Michelin: LFI wants to “hold accountable” the large groups “that gorge themselves on public money”

The Insoumis deputies, Manuel Bompard and Clémentine Guette, traveled this Wednesday to the Michelin factory in Cholet, whose closure the group announced on Tuesday morning, and proposed that the management explain itself to the National Assembly.

This is a rare enough case to highlight. LFI deputies Manuel Bompard and Clémentine Guette visited the Cholet facility on Wednesday afternoon, a day after Michelin management announced its closure. The vice president of the National Assembly endorsed the statements made the day before in the chamber by the Prime Minister, who declared that he wanted to “know” what the Auchan and Michelin groups do “with the public money that we have given them.” . “It’s a good clue when Michel Barnier says ‘we are going to ask questions about the use of public money, we would like to know what it was used for,'” he said.

The parliamentarian invited the Head of Government to allow the holding of a commission of inquiry in the National Assembly “to determine the causes of this type of fiasco.” Therefore, he wants to “demand responsibilities from those responsible and, in particular, from the bosses of these large capitalist groups that gorge themselves on public money and abandon all their employees overnight without being held accountable.” The French tire giant announced to its employees on Tuesday the closure of its Cholet and Vannes (Morbihan) plants before 2026, which have a total of 1,254 employees.

Manuel Bompard in favor of a law on the subject

Clémentine Guette was accompanied by Manuel Bompard, LFI MP for Bouches-du-Rhône, who recalled an employee who questioned him about the need to “receive compensation in terms of preserving jobs when we distribute public money in the form of tax credits for the investigation.” The national coordinator of La France insoumise formulated an initiative similar to that of his colleague: to summon the group’s leadership to the National Assembly “to ask for explanations.”

The need for Michelin to be “accountable” seems all the more justified in the eyes of the two elected officials as “it is not a group that is in financial difficulties”, but “a group that makes profits and pays dividends”, as Manuel Bompard remembers. us.
