Average fish auction price rises almost 15% in 2022

The average price of fish traded at auctions and posts in mainland Portugal, managed by Docapesca, rose by 14.9% in October compared to the same period last year, the company, under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture, announced this Saturday.

In a statement, Docapesca – Portos e Lotas, SA states that “this increase was transversal to the different segments of the national fishing fleet, with greater expression in trawlers (18.5% more), but also in multipurpose vessels (15 more 0.7 %) and in siege craft (plus 14.9%)”.

Docapesca, a state-owned company overseen by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, revealed that among the most common species, horse mackerel recorded an average price increase of 4% compared to 2021.

“However, since 2017, the average price of this species, the subject of appreciation and promotion campaigns developed by Docapesca, has already increased by 61%,” the statement reads, highlighting that “the income of fishermen exceeds 2021 values”.

Also, according to company data sent to the Lusa agency, the global value of the fish traded in the auction reached 211.6 million euros, an increase of 1.2% compared to 2021, “the year in which the historical maximum of the sale was registered”.

In contrast, the traded volume decreased by 11.9% to 86.3 thousand tons.

Docapesca – Portos e Lotas, SA is a company of the state business sector, supervised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, which, under the terms of Legislative Decree No. Portuguese, is also the public service of the first sale of fishing services in support of the fishing industry and the respective ports.
