In the United Kingdom, three US air bases are on alert. According to a statement from the United States Air Force (USAF), “several unidentified drones” were sighted over the bases of RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk County and RAF Feltwell in Norfolk. These bases are about one hundred kilometers from London.
The events that the BCC has just revealed occurred between Wednesday and Friday. These American bases belong to the United Kingdom. They are strategic. Mildenhall is home to the USAF 100th Air Refueling Wing, Lakenheath is home to the USAF F-35A and F-15E. Nicknamed Liberty Wings, it also served as a storage base for American B-61 nuclear missiles. The takeoff of these aircraft would have been suspended due to these overflights.
RAF Feltwell is equally important. It is at this logistics site where American soldiers are housed.
“The right to protect”
At this time, the purpose of these overflights is unknown to the USAF and Royal Air Force. Did they have hostile intentions, intelligence objectives or simply a provocation? Both the US and British air forces remain cautious. They have not specified whether these devices have been neutralized, but they warn that they reserve “the right to protect” these infrastructures.
How many drones have flown over these bases and what type of machines are they? On these points, the USAF remains vague.
“The number of drones fluctuated and their size and configuration varied.”
For its part, the British Ministry of Defense says it takes things very seriously without saying more about the measures that have been taken. Concern is high after Putin’s thinly veiled threats against Westerners and use of a transcontinental missile to attack Ukraine.
