The Ukrainian state will take control of several “strategically important” companies to help the war effort, including hydrocarbon producer Ukrnafta and aircraft manufacturer Motor Sich, the government announced on Monday. “A decision has been made to expropriate the assets of strategically important companies and turn them into state property,” Ukraine’s Security Council Secretary Oleksiy Danilov told a news conference.

In addition to Motor Sich and Ukrnafta, the state also took control of Zaporozhtransformator, a company specializing in the production of jets, the truck manufacturer AvtoKraz and the Ukrtatnafta oil refinery. “The assets of these five companies will be managed by the Ministry of Defense to meet the urgent needs of the armed forces. These include the supply of fuel and lubricants, the repair of military equipment and weapons,” said the Ukrainian Defense Minister, Oleksiï Reznikov.
Prime Minister Denis Chmygal stressed that these companies manufacture “essential products for the needs of the defense and armed forces, as well as for the energy sector.”
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, Ukraine has been heavily dependent on Western arms supplies and financial support from the US and the EU.
