“Icon of the Seas”: the crazy numbers of the future giant ocean liner

The Royal Caribbean cruise line opened reservations for one of its ships under construction, the “Icon of the Seas”, in October. This 365-meter-long behemoth raises questions about its environmental impact.

Thousands of passengers, hundreds of meters in length… Theicon of the seas is an extraordinary cruise ship, built by Royal Caribbean International.

The latter experienced, thanks to the transatlantic that will set sail in 2024, its “most important reservation day” in its 53-year history when reservations for this cruise opened at the end of October. The ship will depart from Miami, USA, for a week-long tour of the Caribbean.

Everything on this ship shows a certain excess, which worries environmental experts, especially since cruise ships are regularly criticized for their harmful impact on the climate. Royal Caribbean claims to use clean fuel, which does not reassure specialists, since it still uses fossil fuels.

This is what the huge ship will look like, according to the numbers declared by the company with its figures published in October:

• 7600 passengers

This is the maximum number of passengers that can stay on the ship. They will be distributed in more than 2,800 cabins.

• 7 pools

This is the number of pools that must contain theicon of the seas, more than the number of municipal swimming pools in the cities of Rennes or Bordeaux. The ship must also have nine hot tubs and six slides.

• 15 restaurants and bars

In addition to the pools mentioned above, there will be plenty of entertainment on board the liner. It should also include an ice rink, a climbing wall, or even a miniature golf course. As for restoration, 15 restaurants and bars are available to passengers.

• 365 meters

The ship, under construction in Turku, Finland, will be 365 meters long. It is more than the height of the Eiffel Tower.

• A $94,000 ticket

Depending on the cabins chosen, the prices on the site currently range between 1,000 and 40,000 euros per person. A company official told US media in early November weekly trips that a ticket had been sold for 94,000 dollars (just over 94,000 euros).
