Energy will eat the margins of most companies at the end of the year

Activity was stable in October and the Banque de France forecast positive growth in the fourth quarter. But the impact of rising energy prices will weigh more than in the summer.

The French can adopt a more sober behavior on the energy side, the rise in prices will hurt in winter: according to the survey carried out by the Banque de France for the month of November, most companies will suffer a negative impact on your margins, and your business in general.

In detail, between 44 and 66% of companies, depending on the sector, declare that energy will have a “low to high impact” on their margins. Industry suffers more (66%) than construction (63%) and services (44%). They are also more likely to report “large” losses: 25% of them, compared to 11% of services and 17% of construction.

Statistics from the Banque de France show that the impact of rising energy prices is yet to come, in most of the shock: entrepreneurs are much less likely to believe that they have been penalized in their past activity, in October. Only 6 to 7% report strong slowdowns in activity in the past, all sectors as a whole; As for the activity to come from here to the end of January, they are between 10 (services) and 17% (industry).

The automobile industry is the sector in which a strong impact on activity is manifested the most, ahead of the chemical and metallurgical industries, mass consumption, or even the production of rubber or wood and paper.

No negative growth this year

Energy is the main threat to activity, as central bank statements point to a slowdown in the rise in raw materials, with contracting difficulties easing slightly, across all sectors combined. Compromises the first month of autumn in terms of growth:

But this decline, which follows a slow third quarter (+0.2% according to INSEE), would only be a low point before the end of the year before a limited but stable recovery. The dynamism of the summer should continue to drag down some of the sectors, supporting consumption and the order book.

Thus, in November, the contracting companies maintained positive projections for their activity, despite levels of uncertainty considered still very high compared to normal, which have been slowly declining since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.
