Inflation: the French spend 15% more than in 2020 on their animals

Rising prices force some homeowners to make tough decisions.

943 euros per year. This is the envelope that an average Frenchman dedicates to his pet, according to an IFOP study carried out for the specialized site Woopets. Conducted in 2022, the survey follows a similar review two years ago: a 15% increase in animal-related costs is seen.

As expected, food continues to be the main item of expenditure, with an average of 59 euros spent per month. With expected variations: the owners of the Paris region declare 81.70 of the expenses, compared to 55.60 of those who live in rural areas.

This item is also the one that has increased the most, with 643 euros spent on food per year, or 201 euros more than in 2020, under the effect of inflation. On the contrary, veterinary costs remain quite stable, when leisure and accessories are only the object of 45 euros of expenses… Double that of two years ago.

The survey shows that owners remain very attentive to inflation, reporting price increases that are felt not only in the food component (75% of them), but also in veterinary costs (53%), in leisure (47 %) or in hygiene and care. (Four. Five%).

Resignations and abandonments

Worse still, these increases are pushing some people to make drastic decisions: a third have already reduced their personal needs to support those of their little companion, and one in five are considering it.

The poorest households are the ones that are most often forced to give up, logically: two-thirds of people who earn less than 900 euros a month explain that they have already changed their purchasing behavior, either restricting or cutting certain expenses.

Worse yet, 19% have reduced the amount of food their pets eat, or are considering doing so. 14% have separated from it, or are preparing to do so.
