Covid-19: China eases restrictions on international arrivals

China has notably announced a easing of the quarantine on arrival in the country. Its duration will increase from ten to eight days.

China announced on Friday a relaxation of certain measures against Covid-19, in particular a reduction of the quarantine on arrival in the country, which goes from ten to eight days. The Asian country is the last major economy to maintain a strict health policy against the coronavirus, with borders that remain closed to most foreign citizens.

A government note, published online by public television CCTV, also announced the end of the much-criticized “circuit breaker” mechanism. Under this rule, international flights to China were canceled for one to two weeks in case a considered too high number of infected passengers were discovered on board on arrival.

A PCR test will suffice

This announcement is a relief for many travellers, who until now were afraid of seeing their flights canceled at the last minute. They were often forced to wait several weeks or even months outside of China before finding seats on a flight.

Another good news for travelers from abroad, Chinese or not: they will have to provide the result of a single PCR test carried out in the 48 hours prior to boarding for China, compared to the two carried out so far.
