TAP: Pedro Nuno Santos guarantees that the company’s sales process has not yet started

Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Pedro Nuno Santos, assured parliament this afternoon that no negotiations are underway with a potential buyer for TAP. In response to Liberal Initiative deputy Carlos Guimarães Pinto, the minister refused to provide details of privatization at a joint hearing of the Budget and Finance and Economy, Public Works and Housing committees on the 2023 state budget and assured that the sales process has not yet started.

The official assured that “the forms of the company have not yet been defined,” so he declined to provide details of timing or percentage. Regarding the opening of the airline’s capital to the market, the minister reiterated that “it was never intended” [do governo] keep 100% of TAP’s capital”.

It should be recalled that the Prime Minister, António Costa, revealed at the end of September that the government plans to privatize TAP within 12 months. For the time being, IAG, owner of British Airways and the Spanish Iberia, and the Franco-Dutch Air France-KLM have already shown public interest.
