Le Monde continues his restart: more than 100 countries increased their military expenditure in 2024, according to data published by the International Peace Research Institute of Stockholm (SIPRI). In 2024, the total amount of military expenses reached $ 2,718 billion, 9.4% more compared to 2023. This is the tenth consecutive year of increase.
The five countries plus expenses in military teams (United States, China, Russia, Germany, India) total a total of $ 1,635 billion, or 60% of the world, including the total of 997 billion for the United States only for the United States. According to SIPRI data, French military spending increased by 6.1%to $ 64.7 billion.

A marked increase in Europe
The SIPRI reports that European military expenditure increased by 17% in 2024, reaching a total of $ 693 billion, a general increase of 83% since 2015. Estimates on Russian spending indicate that the country would have spent $ 149 billion in 2024, but “increase opacity” since 2022, as well as the 30% classification of budgetary expenses during the past year, it encourages SIPRI to consider that real expenses are higher.
Ukraine has increased 2.9% of its military expenses, or $ 64.7 billion.
Germany represents the fourth country more spending worldwide (88.5 billion dollars) and rises in the first step of the podium in central and western Europe.
