The incident is rare: a F/A-18 Super Hornet combat plane slid the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier and sank, carrying with them the tractor that towed it.
“The crew lost control of the aircraft,” said the US Navy. In a statement, which specifies that the sailors who supervised the operation managed to get out of the fall, but that one of them was slightly injured.
An investigation was launched to determine the exact circumstances of the incident. It was not specified if the US Navy was going to launch a aircraft recovery operation, whose price is estimated at around 60 million dollars.
According to an anonymous source cited by CNN, the fall could have been caused by “a tight turn to escape the shots of the hutis.”
Questioned by CNN, a former Captain of the US Navy.
It is a new incident that affects the Aeronaval Group, which has been in maritime operations for several months. The aircraft carrier lost another Super Hornet in December 2024, beaten by a “friend” missile shot, the USS Gettysburg cruise … but integrated into the Aeronaval Group. The aircraft carrier also underwent a collision with a deception against the Egyptian coast last February had to undergo repairs in Greece.
