Electricity: Spain believes that pointing out renewable energies is “irresponsible and simplistic”

The Minister of the Spanish ecological transition considered that he would take “many days” to know the causes of the electricity that affected Spain and Portugal.

Almost a week after the Electric Mega-Corte that hit the Iberian Peninsula, the Spanish Ecological Transition Minister warned that it would have “many days” before knowing its origin, evoking in the middle of a word the possibility of an initial dysfunction from photovoltaic facilities.

“We are talking about many days” still to wait to know the precise causes of the incident, he said in an interview published this Sunday at the country Sara Aagesen, especially evoking an electrical system (…) very complex. “All the hypotheses are open,” they assured the minister, even that of the “cyber -cyber”.

Point the renewable energies, “an irresponsible and simplistic diagnosis”

But, questioned several times about the role that renewable energies could have played in this failure, the minister ended up admitting the possibility of an initial anomaly of the photovoltaic facilities in the southwest of Spain, as mentioned by the Manager of the Spanish Electricity Network (REE).

“To date, we do not know what facilities have stopped operating in the system” in this region, said Sara Aagesen. “Talking about photovoltaic solar energy could rush, even if we see on the map the different production technologies of the region. And there is a lot of photovoltaic solar energy in the southwest of Spain.” But “renewable energies are not dangerous in itself,” he insisted to the minister: “point them out as the origin of the incident,” according to her, an easy diagnosis, “and is” irresponsible and simplistic. “

After cutting, experts in the sector wondered about a possible imbalance between production and the application for electricity, more difficult to correct without adequate technologies in a network where wind and solar energy weigh more, which could have contributed to the collapse of the Spanish system.

The production of electricity in the country has incorporated this “mixture of energy for a long time,” he reminded the minister, immediately “discards” the route of the entrance “of a large amount of renewable energy in the system, since there have been many other days with more solar production in Spain, much less demand, and (that) the system worked very well.” “Renewable energies allow Spain to achieve very important energy independence in a geopolitically vulnerable world,” said the Minister of Ecological Transition.

Spain wants more interconnections with France

He also insisted on the need for connectivity, in particular with France: “In view of what happened on Monday, it is clear that the more interconnections, the more robust the Iberian system is.”

For environmental reasons, France sees a bad eye the installation of two new interconnections in the Pyrenees, he assured the minister. “Let’s insist that this must be an objective beyond our two countries. We are talking about a European market and that cannot be a debate between France and Spain.”

“France must realize that interconnections should be done, whatever happens,” he concludes, saying that he is “convinced that we can overcome the environmental impact.”
