Iberian electric breakdown: “There is no element” at this stage implying renewable energy

Since the general breakdown, certain political parties have accused renewable energies in Spain is responsible for an imbalance between production and the application for electricity.

The French high voltage electricity manager RTE indicated on Monday not to have an element at this stage that indicates that wind and solar production would be “the cause of the blackout” that affected Spain and Portugal, always inexplicable.

RTE admits that wind and lots that covered just before the failure, approximately 70% of the production of Spanish electricity were “significant”, but emphasizes that they did not have “unprecedented”, “such configurations” have already been reached in 2024 and 2025.

The manager published a document on Monday in the form of 20 questions and answers on his website, some to rule out a lot of false information that has turned the loop into the networks (fires, atmospheric conditions, etc.), others to put certain hypotheses in perspective.

Since the general breakdown, certain political parties have accused renewable energies in Spain are responsible for an imbalance between production and electricity request, since the network administrator does not control the sun or the force of the wind.

But operators remember that during previous breakdowns, problems often come from the transmission network, not from production energy plants.

The French manager also believes that the results of the investigations carried out at European scale “will not be known in the next few days.”

Imbalance

In particular, they will have to “analyze this strong part of renewable energies has been able to play a role in the spread of the incident.”

A group of experts, established by the European Network of Electricity Transportation Networks (Enso-E), will investigate the European Agency for Energy Regulators (Acer) on Monday. According to RTE, European texts established 6 months for complete conclusions.

After the breakdown, France could gradually reinject up to 2 GW in the Spanish network. Six interconnections connect the two countries.

A new “Gulf of Gascogne” is being built, mainly under water, which will carry the exchange capacity between the two countries of 2.8 to 5 GW, which allows reducing the electrical insulation of the Iberian Peninsula.

“France must realize that interconnections must be made, whatever happens,” said Spanish Minister of Ecological Transition Sara Aagesen on Sunday, ensuring that, for environmental reasons, France sees a bad eye the installation of two new interconnections through the Pyrenees.

Rte says “being ready to work with (…) His Spanish and Portuguese counterparts”, but insists “the need to strengthen the French network in parallel to guarantee a safe farm of interconnections over time.”
