Another record for the game in France in 2024, which, thanks to Euro Football and the Paris Olympic Games, saw its turnover of change from almost 5% to 14 billion euros, according to the National Authority of the Games (ANJ) on Wednesday.
Last year, the gross product of the Games (PBJ), the difference between players from players and profits donated by operators, online sports bets flew by 19%, almost 1.8 billion euros.
Among the forty sports open to bets in France, four are distinguished by the amounts of bets: soccer, tennis, basketball and rugby, the ANJ underlines. Online horse races increased slightly (+1.5% to 339 million), while poker is stirred (-2% to 493 million).
The FDJ is progressing again
In 2024, the number of active players increased (5.7 million players) as the number of unique players who now have 3.9 million. The population of sports stationing has rejuvenated (30% of sports stationers are between 18 and 24 years old) and was also feminized (with 15% of a bet), the regulator underlines.
If the online games have increased considerably last year, most of the game activity comes from the FDJ, renamed FDJ United, which produced a PBJ of more than 7 billion euros (+6%) that uses the lottery.
Then come the 202 French casinos with a PBJ 1.2% to 2.7 billion euros for a stable number (31 million). The PBJ of the 7 Parisian game clubs is located at 123 million euros.
Finally, the PMU sees its PBJ fall by 2%, to 1.7 billion euros, but its net profit remained stable in 2024 (837 million), which allows to maintain its financing in the horsepower sector, and the number of players increased (3.5 million players).
Soon a “less focused on risk players” model?
For the ANJ, this dynamic means that it will be necessary to redouble a surveillance in 2025 to the risk players and the commercial pressure of the operators, even if the increase in taxes that will enter into force on July 1 could affect the online market activity in 2025.
“The first months of 2025 confirm this growth dynamic,” said the president of this authority, Isabelle Falque-Pierre.
And “the mobilization of all interested parties to change the representations associated with the money game that leads to their trivialization in French society,” he continues in the press release.
Another point of attention in 2025: the opening of the monetizable digital objects market (Jonum), an experiment that should begin in September 2025 after the publication of decrees and to which the ANJ will be “particularly attentive to the strict compliance of the borders with the game.”
