Editorial. Do Republicans still have an economic compass?

LR activists join this weekend at congresses to designate their new leader. Beyond personalities, for what ideas and, above all, what economic line?

This weekend, LR activists join in congresses to choose their new boss. A name will be announced on Sunday at 6 pm is fine. But the real question is elsewhere: which political line will accompany this face? And above all, what economic vision?

Because in the sovereign, in immigration, the right is clear. Farm. Aligned. But in the economy? The total blur. What is the economic composition of the Republicans today? What concrete proposals to release growth, improve work, lower taxes or even control public spending? Nothing. Or almost.

Ask internally, it will be answered without detour: nobody really works on merits. It is an ideological desert, in any case of the economy.

Rigor speech, ease votes

The most striking is the great permanent gap between speeches and acts. Every morning, we denounced an obese state, an out of control public spending, a president who “cultivates the box” … but every night, we vote to weigh it again. Take the last budget:

  • Laurent Wauquiez affirms the accelerated revaluation of pensions, the first expense of the State.
  • The LR Senate rejects some few savings in the communities.
  • And last year, LR proposed to limit the price of gasoline to 1.50 euros … a measure in several tens of billions of euros.

And during this time, we denounce the debt. Go to understand.

Between the liberal platform and local clientelism

Republicans are taken in vice: between the liberalism of the gallery, so brilliant in the speeches, and the clientelism in the field, with officials chosen local anxious to defend “their” hospitals “, their” positions “, their” subsidies. A right that speaks rigor in Paris and that digs spending in the region.

Result? An illegible line. And therefore, a crumb from Crumb. You have to decide. And above all, work. Yes, debt is a topic. Yes, public spending must be observed. But to pretend to embody a serious alternative, it must first be consistent. And above all, you have to roll up the sleeves.
