Take the money from the roads and, above all, serious to the trucks: the head of the SNCF exerts pressure on the government to save the French railroad

In BFMTV, the CEO of the SNCF Group highlighted several clues to find additional one billion euros per year, including the resurrection of the ecotax in transit trucks, which is controversial.

This is Jean-Pierre Farandou’s last fight when he has to leave the presidency of the SNCF group in the coming weeks: to guarantee the financing of the regeneration of the Ferré network outside of TGV, an issue mentioned for years but that today becomes an absolute emergency.

In BFMTV this Thursday, he repeated infrastructure threats.

Specifically, the Network needs 4,500 million euros per year, the yield contract for ten years between the State and the SNCF network provides 3 billion euros per year, while the group promises additional 500 million. Therefore, there is a billion missing per year.

The CEO has been offering several financial routes for years, especially capturing part of the winding of the European fiscal compensation for carbon for air and road transport (STDs) or in energy savings certificates (CEE). Clues that do not seem to have the favor of Bercy.

“We only have discomfort: traffic trucks contaminate, crushed the roads,”

Jean-Pierre Farandou also wants part of the income of road concessions to be discussed towards the railroad. Concessions mature between 2031 and 2036 and generate around 13 billion euros in billing per year.

The CEO also highlights the truck tax in transit in France. “The Germans who face a great need for financing (of the Railway Network, Editor’s note) have decided to establish a heavy merchandise vehicle that brings them 8 billion euros per year.”

Therefore, the idea would be to resume the famous Ecotax, whose implementation had been strongly disputed in France, causing the government to reduce.

The ball is now in the Bercy camps, it is also subject to “Ambition France Transports”, A series of workshops Aimed at resting the basic concepts of a sustainable, robust and durable public transport financing system until 2040, but without further eating state finances.
