Donald Trump signs decrees for a “rebirth” with forced march in civil nuclear energy

The US president wants in particular that the examination of a request for the construction of a new nuclear reactor does not exceed 18 months, and intends to reform the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, while increasing uranium extraction and enrichment.

Donald Trump signed four decrees on Friday, according to an advisor, to launch a “Renaissance” of civil nuclear in the United States, with the ambition of quadruple nuclear energy in the next 25 years. The US president, who has promised “very fast and very safe” procedures, wants to examine a request to build a new nuclear reactor does not exceed 18 months, and intends to reform the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, while increasing the extraction and enrichment of uranium.

“We want to be able to try and implement nuclear reactors during the current mandate,” so in January 2029, said a senior White House official, who did not want to be identified, during an exchange with journalists.

94 operational reactors

The United States remains the main global nuclear energy, with 94 operational reactors, but its average age is growing (42 years). Faced with the growing electricity needs drawn in particular by the emergence of artificial intelligence, and for the will of certain countries to decarbonize its economies, nuclear energy is experiencing a renewed interest in the global level.

France, which with 57 reactors remains the most nuclearized country per capita, announced in 2022 a new program of 6 or even 14 reactors, the first expected in 2038. China, particularly active, now equal to France with 57 reactors in its territory and has another 27 under construction. Russia remains the first exporting country of electric plants, with 26 reactors under construction, including 6 at home.
