Foreign students currently in Harvard University banks are mostly Chinese. This is the case for 15 years almost without suspending.
Hundreds of thousands of young people leave the average empire every year to study in the United States, attracted by the prestige of Ivy League universities such as Harvard, Princeton or Yale.
This collaboration has long been a pillar of relations between the two nations despite political tensions. Donald Trump’s decision to prevent Harvard from welcoming foreign students does not please Beijing.
“Progressive Mess”
China is not happy, especially because US authorities point it directly.
The reasons for Donald Trump to justify his decision. Harvard is, according to him, an “anti -Semitic institution of the far left”, a “threat to democracy”, a “progressive disaster.” But a White House official has other accusations:
Strong comments defended by the Department of Internal Security. In a press release, he denounced alleged ties between Harvard and “Chinese institutions or individuals linked to military research.”
Several elected officials, including most Republicans, are concerned about indirect access to Chinese authorities, through Harvard researchers, with American cutting technologies. They also wrote to the University that he does not comment.
A “strategic gift for China”
The administration thinks of penalizing Beijing with his decision, but he could also pay the price. For a long time, the ability of American universities to enlist the best students in the world is considered an essential factor in the influence of the country, whether science, technology or industries. It is also an essential source of income for these establishments.
For Larry Summers, former Harvard president, this implacability of Trump could not only penalize the country but also take Beijing:
The Chinese “must experience great satisfaction to see our society turn against itself as they did during the cultural revolution,” he adds.
Seeing the opportunity to take into account, Hong Kong universities already communicate with foreign students who could not integrate Harvard. The city promises them an “academic transition without problems.”
